Burbidge-Parry Marriage License
The Burbidge-Parry marriage license confirms the marriage of Joseph Edward Burbidge & Fanny L. Parry in Salt Lake County, Utah on 27 June 1901. They were both 25 years old and residents of Salt Lake City when they married.1
After filling out a marriage application and signing their names, they were granted the authority to marry on 24 June 1901 by the Deputy County Clerk, C. Frank Emery, who determined that they met the requirements for a lawful marriage in the State of Utah. They were then free be married by a judge or an approved clergyman of their choice.
Three days later they were married according to the rites of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) by Elder John R. Winder. Based on a newspaper article written a few days after the event, they married in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.2 The ceremony was witnessed by George Romney and W. W. Riter. Then the bride & groom, the officiant and the two witnesses signed the license. They were officially married, but it would not be final until the license was filed with the County Clerk’s Office.
It was filed there on 1 July 1901 where the information on the form was transcribed into the record book.1 It seems likely that the original was placed in a file holding the application. These files are now held at the Salt Lake County Archives.
The couple should have been mailed an official marriage certificate. This is one family document I don’t have in my keeping.
