A letter home: Albert J. Silver to his sister, Nellie Cummings, 1918
I found this photocopy of a letter written by Albert J. Silver to his sister, Nellie Cummings, in the archival collection of Ruth (Cummings) Sorofman. I don’t know the location of the original letter, if it even exists. I believe at least a page, after page 3, is missing. Albert, whose nickname was Pete, wrote the letter on October 1918 while serving in the U.S. Army in France during WWI.
According to the few service records available online, Albert served as a mechanic in Company D of the 103 Infantry from April 13, 1917 to April 28, 1919. He saw action in France and probably took part in the last Battle of the Marne. The war ended on November 11, 1918, just a month after he wrote this letter.
