David, Ida & Harold Sorofman
Both adults look down and then up at the camera with shy smiles; the boy is more at ease. They stand close to each other. The woman leans into the man, her head resting on his arm, her hand thrown over his shoulder. The son leans against his father in an almost cocky pose, and his parents are keeping him close; the woman has her hand over his arm and the man rests his hand on the boys shoulder.
This family photo was clicked on the spur of the moment. Ida had no time to comb her hair. Both David and Harold stand with their shirts only partially tucked in. It’s as if they just stepped out of the house and into the yard for a quick photo. I imagine the photographer had them stand facing into the sun, so he could get the best shot. They complied with the request even though the brightness made them squint.
Based on the age of Harold, who was born in Enterprise, Oregon in 1922, the photo was taken sometime between 1924-1926. According to the 1930 census, the Sorofman family was then living in Portland, Oregon. The photo could have been taken anywhere. They could have been visiting family who, by then, were spread across the country.
Perhaps they were just visiting with a friend in their own home on Porter Street in Portland on a sunny afternoon.
