HATTEN FAMILY RECORD.
This letter by Robert L. Hatton, Sidney, Iowa, is addressedto his nephew, C. B. Hatten, Sidney, Iowa, and is datedJanuary 7th, 1904. This copy was made by the editor.
"In accordance with your request made of me a short timesince, to give you what information I could in regard tothe Genealogy and Ancestry of our people, I take pleasurein submitting herewith what information I am in possessionof, and also referring to as early dates as I can ---
"In 1775 Thos. Jefferson (who I believe was Governor ofVirginia at that time) went to Italy for the purpose ofexamining and procuring the different kinds of fruits ofthat country with a view of cultivating them on his largepossessions in Virginia -- It was his purpose also tosecure and bring with him on his return, a man thoroughlyacquainted with fruit culture in Italy, to take full chargeof same on his domain in Virginia and upon recommendationof some of the leading horticulturists & Vinyardists [sic]of that country, he succeeded in engaging my Great GrandFather, Anthony Gianniny (pronounced Je-ne-ne-accent onsecond syllable) his wife my Great Grand Mother was MissMary Modena.
"My G. G. Father was to stay with Col. Jefferson fouryears, at the end of which time, Jefferson was to defrayall his expenses home, in addition to his salary, providedhe desired to go back, and if not he, Jefferson, was togive him 100 acres of land in this country.
"They then set out on their return to Virginia, arriving atRichmond in the spring of 1776, after three monthsboisterous voyage, my Grandmother being then 2 years old.
"My G. G. Father Gianniny remained with Jefferson fiveyears as general manager of all Jefferson's farming andfruit business, and then went on his own farm thatJefferson gave him near Charlottesville, where he raised afamily of 8 children as follows: - Catharine, Margaret,Nancy, Polly, Betsey, Nickolas, Frank and Lawrence. MyGrandmother was the oldest of the family and marriedWilliam Meeks* - Margaret
* Marriage bond of William Meeks and Catherine Gianniny inAlbemarle Co., Va., is dated July 17, 1793.
(See also William and Mary Quarterly, Vol. V, p. 12, andWoods, History of Albemarle County, Virginia, p. 360.)
26THE NEBRASKA AND MIDWEST
married Richard Meeks - Nancy married John Hayden - Pollymarried William Hogg - Betsey married John Tuggle -Nickolas married Polly Pierce - Frank married Judith Butler- and Lawrence married her sister, Susan.
"My G. Father Meeks was an Englishman, but of Americanbirth. He was a great mechanic - a natural genius - he wasa practical millwright, carpenter, wagon and carriagemaker, and blacksmith. He died in 1850 in Kanawha County,West Virginia., aged about 75. My Grandmother Meeks alsodied in Kanawha County, West Virginia, in 1856, aged about82.
"My G. Mother Meeks was a great favorite, when a child, ofCol. Jefferson, and lived in his family more than she didat her father's before her marriage. She secretly carriedmeals to him for nearly two weeks while he was in hidingwhile Lord Cornwallis with a squad of Brittishers [sic]were around his premises searching for him to make him aprisoner. She also kept him posted as to the movements ofthe Red Coats - but they never troubled her, nor anythingabout the premises. I have never been advised as to thedate of the deaths of my G. G. Father and G. G. MotherGianniny, but they died on their farm five miles fromCharlottesville - county seat of Albemarle County. Theplace was called 'Blenheim.'
"My Grandmother Meeks was a noted singer. Her fame spreadfar and wide as a vocalist. Neighbors and others for manymiles around would gather in companies and come to herhouse since my recollection of evenings to hear her sing. Ihave attended many of her singing entertainments. She was[a] perfect Nightengale. She was born April 28th, 1774, inItaly, in what was called 'States of the Church', but wereProtestants. My Grandmother Meeks united with the BaptistChurch when quite young, but my Grandfather Meeks, althougha Christian gentleman, and a man of rare integrity, neverunited with any church until he became an old man, and thenhe was baptized into the Baptist Church.
"My G. mother Meeks bore seven children - viz: James,Isham, John, Richard, Susan, Eliza and William. James Inever saw, having died before my time, Isham raised afamily and died in Ohio - John died in Rockbridge County,West Virginia - Richard and Susan died in Kanawha County,West Virginia - Eliza (my mother) died at [sic] Sidney,Iowa - William died at Logansport, Ind. He was a presidingElder in the Methodist church.
"My G. Father Hatton was an Englishman, born, raised andmarried in England, and then with his young wife, came tothis country and settled in Nelson County, Virginia. Therewere born to them six children, viz: - William (my father),James, John, Jane, Mary and Richard. When Richard was aboutfour years old, and my father about 16, their mother died, and in less than a year it was discovered that my G. Fatherwas engaged to, and about to marry a young woman yet in herteens, so the children all interposed strong and determinedobjections to having a young girl for a stepmother, so thematter was compromised by the Father giving the farm, stock, tools, and all the household goods and everything asit then stood, together with quite a sum of money for eachof the children, for the old man was independently wealthy- he then took his young wife and a large amount of moneyand went to Kentucky, where he settled and raised a largefamily of children - I believe twelve.
"The first children never saw their Father afterwards, andall this incident so upset and exasperated the children, that my Father declared he would, and did, change the nameof Hatton, and always afterwards 'Hatten' instead of'Hatton' as it was originally spelled, so my Father wasalone responsible for changing 'o' to 'e' as the former wasthe original English way of spelling it, and is yet withall the old Hattons and in England.
GENEALOGICAL RECORD27
"My Father, William Hatton, died at Sidney, Iowa, in 1896,near the age of 96 years. James and John Hatton died inAlabama, victims of the late internecine war as thousandsof others did. Jane and Mary died in Ohio, the latter nevermarried. Richard died in Kanawha County, West Virginnia. All except Mary had families.
"My G. G. Father Meeks came from England to this countrywhen a young man and shortly afterwards married Miss MollieWest, daughter of John West of Hanover County, Virginia, who was an independently wealthy farmer, where he raised afamily of seven children, my Grandfather William Meeksbeing the youngest of the family.
"I have compiled the foregoing from data given me by mymother in writing prior to her death in regard to ourpeople on my mother's side, but regarding our ancestry ofthe Hatton's, I write from memory and recollections, asgiven me by my father as well as by my mother on the sameline."
