These volumes authoritativelycover 180 families, all of Davis's colonial forebears plusnineteen English families in the immediate ancestry ofAmerican immigrants.
The Davis opus is undoubtedly the premier work for northernNew England, and an often essential companion volume to thecelebrated Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and NewHampshire, which it considerably expands, especially formany Essex County families with ties further north. Almostanyone with considerable New England ancestry--and as manyas 100 million living Americans, about 40 percent of thepopulation, have some colonial New England forebears--willdescend from one or more, often a dozen or more, of thefamilies herein.
